Real Life Over Perfect Poses

Documentary family photography is about capturing your family as you truly are, not as a perfectly posed version of yourselves. Instead of carefully arranging everyone and asking you to smile at the camera, I photograph what naturally unfolds when your family spends time together. A child wrapped around your leg, the way your partner looks at you when you're not paying attention, the laughter, the chaos, the quiet moments in between...these are the moments that tell the real story of your family.

Unlike traditional posed portraits, documentary family photos focus on genuine interaction and real connection. The goal is to capture what your family actually feels like during this stage of life. Because let's be real, isn't that what you actually want to remember in the years to come?

A Different Kind Of Family Photo Session

Traditional family photography often focuses on posed portraits where everyone stands or sits in a specific arrangement and smiles for the camera. Those images can be beautiful (and don't worry, I will still capture a few of those "Christmas card" shots during your session), but they only show a small slice of who your family is. Documentary family photography sessions are designed to feel more like an experience than a photoshoot. We might hike to a hidden spot in the mountains, wander through a meadow at sunset, or let the kids splash in a cold stream. I guide the overall flow of the session, but the moments themselves happen naturally. Instead of directing every movement, I observe. I anticipate. I photograph what unfolds.  In fact, instead of using the word "posing", I've always preferred to use the word "directing" in reference to the role I play during your session. This approach creates natural family photos that feel relaxed, authentic, and full of life. And the emotion you'll feel when viewing your photos, whether your gallery is brand new or multiple years old, is priceless.

Emotion Is The Focus

In fact, what makes documentary style family photography so meaningful is the focus on emotion and connection. The goal isn't perfection—it's truth. The photos that matter most years from now won't be the ones where everyone stood still and smiled perfectly. They will be the ones that remind you how this season of life felt.

The wild energy of young kids.

The tenderness between you and your partner.

The way your family fits together right now.

These are the moments I’m always watching for.

Why I Love Offering Documentary Family Photography

One of the reasons I love offering documentary family photography for my clients is that it turns a photo session into something more meaningful than just showing up and taking pictures. We often plan sessions around locations that invite a little adventure—places where kids can explore, run, splash in water, or climb rocks. Instead of trying to keep everyone perfectly posed, families get to relax and actually enjoy the experience together.

I also love getting to know my clients during the planning process. We talk about your family, your personalities, and what kinds of places feel like you. By the time the session arrives, it feels less like meeting a photographer and more like going on a small adventure together! Those shared experiences naturally lead to the kinds of moments that make memorable family photos like real laughter, connection, and interaction that can’t be forced.

For Families Who Want Something Different

Documentary photography tends to attract families who want their photos to feel a little more like art and a little less like a traditional portrait. These are often families who love outdoor locations and don’t mind getting their feet wet in a river, hiking a short trail to a hidden location, or letting their kids run freely instead of asking them to sit still (if that's you - we're a perfect match!). They care more about the experience and the story than about everyone looking perfectly polished.

For many families, this approach creates family photos that feel more natural, adventurous, and personal.

The Result: Photographs That Feel Like Memories

When you look back at documentary family photos years from now, they feel less like a photoshoot and more like a memory you can step back into. Your daughter reaching for your hand.

Your son laughing with his whole body. The wind moving through your hair as the sun drops behind the mountains. These are the kinds of moments that become family history.

And that is what documentary family photography is really about: preserving the real, beautiful story of your life exactly as it is right now.
