There’s something sacred about the Oregon coast in the early morning hours. Before the beaches fill with people and the day fully wakes up, everything feels still, soft, and deeply intimate. This recent sunrise session with a sweet family of three was exactly that kind of morning: quiet, meaningful, and full of the kinds of moments I love documenting most as a documentary family photographer. I was so honored to attend this shoot as part of an incredible weekend with other amazing photographers at the Stormy Solis Hometown Retreat. The entire weekend was an educational and creative treasure trove and I'm still daydreaming about this particular shoot!

Even though I’m based in Northern Utah, destination sessions like this one on the Oregon coast will always have a special place in my heart.

A Slow Sunrise Along the Oregon Coast

We met just before sunrise on a quiet stretch of beach tucked along the Oregon coast. The air was cool, the waves rolled in gently, and the sky slowly shifted from soft blue to warm gold as the sun began to rise behind the clouds.

Mom, dad, and their little girl wandered the shoreline together while we documented the morning as it unfolded naturally. Their daughter had the most beautiful curly blonde hair that caught every bit of morning light. She explored the beach with wide-eyed curiosity, peeking into tide pools, climbing around caves, and holding tightly to her parents’ hands between adventures.

It didn’t feel rushed or posed. It felt like real life! Which is exactly what this family was hoping to capture.

Documentary Family Photography That Feels Like You

As a documentary family photographer based in Northern Utah, I want sessions to feel more like an experience than a photoshoot. Instead of focusing on perfectly posed smiles, I guide families into spaces where genuine connection can naturally happen. This Oregon coast session was full of those moments! The quiet conversations between mom and dad. The way their little girl rested her head on her mama’s shoulder after exploring the rocks. The laughter echoing through the caves. Tiny moments that may seem ordinary now, but years from now will hold so much meaning.

One of the most special parts of the morning happened when mama took a few quiet moments to nurse her baby by the shore. The beach was nearly empty except for the sound of waves and seabirds in the distance. It felt incredibly peaceful and deeply personal, and I was honored to document that season of motherhood for her. These are the moments I never want families to forget.

The Sweetest Surprise at the End

As the session came to a close and the sun climbed higher into the sky, mama shared one final surprise with us. They were expecting baby number two! It was one of those moments that instantly makes you emotional as a photographer because you realize you’re documenting a family right in the middle of becoming something new. Their little girl won’t always be the only baby. These quiet mornings together won’t always look the same. And somehow, this session became even more meaningful knowing another chapter is already beginning.

Northern Utah Family Photographer Available for Destination Sessions

While I’m based in Northern Utah and photograph families throughout Salt Lake City, Davis County, and the surrounding mountain areas, I’m always open to destination family photography sessions for families who feel connected to my work. Whether we’re hiking into the mountains, wandering desert landscapes, or chasing sunrise along the Oregon coast, my goal is always the same: to create honest, artful images that feel like your real life. The beautiful, fleeting, meaningful parts you never want to forget are the ones that are always worth capturing.
